Why Athletes Need Pilates
If you search for Athletes doing Pilates, you might find Lebron James on a reformer, the Denver Broncos foam rolling as a team, or NFL linemen with muscles shaking in a Pilates Studio. But why are these professional athletes adding Pilates to their training? Incorporating Pilates into your athletic training enhances:
- Core strength
- Flexibility & Mobility
- Body awareness
- Breath control
- A mind-body connection
- Stabilizer muscle strength
Developing a strong, balanced, and stable body as an athlete makes you a more powerful and efficient athlete. Pilates focuses on the deep stabilizer muscles of your powerhouse, which are essential to generating power and maintaining balance in athletic movement. The mindful movement of Pilates is controlled, lengthening and strengthening the muscles at the same time. Improved flexibility and mobility can help athletes avoid reaching a plateau in their sport, aid in injury prevention, and lessen tight, sticky muscles and connective tissue that can restrict movement. Pilates focuses on the breath and connecting the mind to the body. This increased body awareness is hugely beneficial to athlete,s translating directly to athletic movement in their sport. Repetitive movement is essential to sports, but it can often cause the body to become imbalanced, which can lead to injury. Pilates works to help balance the body. There is a huge range of benefits of Pilates for Athletes. However, it is not always accessible or affordable…..
Why I Designed this Program

“Having been an athlete myself and raising athletes, I completely know the demands of practice, skills sessions, strength training, speed and conditioning, games, matches, and meets,” Andy Orizotti (creator of Pilates Fusion Training for Athletes). There is very little time to add weekly hour-long Pilates sessions in a studio. Not only that, in-studio Pilates is not always accessible or affordable for High School, Prep School, or Collegiate athletes. That is precisely why Pilates Fusion Training for Athletes was designed. 10-minute online mat Pilates sessions, something that can actually fit into an athlete’s busy and rigorous training week, that can be done anywhere from the gym to the soccer field or track at the rink or in a dorm room with minimal equipment.
Who designed Pilates Fusion Training for Athletes?
Pilates Fusion Training for Athletes was designed by Andy Garreffa Orizotti. Andy has been teaching Pilates, personal training, and working with Athletes for over 20 years. Andy is certified in the Stott Pilates method, specializing in Athletic Conditioning. She is a lifelong learner, taking workshops and courses every year to further her study and education in Pilates, mobility, and the ever-changing fitness world. Andy has been a multi-sport athlete her entire life and is a former D1 sprinter for the University of Montana. She was an all-conference sprinter competing on a full-ride scholarship for 8 seasons. Running the 400 meters indoor and outdoor, training 6 days a week year-round, and an intense strength training program all through High School and College, with very little focus on restorative movement, took a toll on her body. She found Pilates after her collegiate career, in search of something to help balance her body from the years of pounding and strength training. Shortly after discovering Pilates and how it made her body feel, she decided it would be something she did for the rest of her life and got certified as a teacher. Andy has designed and trained athletes in speed enhancement programs, off-ice programs for hockey teams, and taught Pilates to a range of athletes, including runners, gymnasts, hockey, soccer, baseball, and football players.
